Will Davison says it is difficult to pin-point where his speed lies compared to the form runners after his hard tyre run was compromised in Practice 3 at Townsville.
Davison was third fastest in the closing session with his best lap established on a pre-marked set of soft tyres.
However the Erebus driver's solid day was hindered when he struck oil from Rick Kelly's engine, curtailing full pace runs on the new set of hard rubber allocated for practice
Davison was earlier the quickest man in the middle session, clocking a 1:13.03s which stood as the fastest time of the day.
“It's really hard to know exactly where we are at,” Davison said afterwards.
“The car feels pretty good on the soft so we will probably do a fair bit of the racing on that.
“The hard tyre, unfortunately I didn't get a run there.
“We are going to have to work hard tonight to see where we are at on that tyre which we are going to qualify on tomorrow.
“I was right behind Rick when he had his big blow up and I was on the tyre then and got a fair bit of oil on them.”
Davison recorded his first podium for the Erebus squad at the Reid Park venue last year.
“It's a good track for us,” he said, having been part of an Erebus one-two in Friday practice 12 months ago.
“We've all got to qualify on the hard tyre so you can look at who's where (after that session).”
