Porsche Carrera Cup Australia has confirmed that half of the brand-new Cup Cars have been sold, with category organisers expecting to confirm a complete 22-car field for the first round of its reborn series at the Formula 1 Qantas Australian Grand Prix in March next year.
Max Twigg, James and Theo Koundouris, Craig Baird, Marc Cini, Michael Loccisano and Matt Coleman are seven of the drivers locked in to compete in the new one-mark series.
The complete grid of 22 cars is expected to be finalised early in 2011.
“To have firm commitments and deposits for so many cars while we’re still three months out from the first race is extremely positive,” says Porsche Cars Australia motorsport manager Jamey Blaikie.
“Some competitors have already paid up in full just to be sure they don’t miss out.”
With the 60th anniversary of Porsche in Australia being celebrated next year, Porsche Cars Australia managing director Michael Winkler says that the anticipated return of Carrera Cup is a great addition to the year.
“Australia is regarded in the Porsche world as the ‘enthusiasts market’ with a higher ratio of motorsport competitors and sale of GT cars and Turbos than any other established Porsche market,” Winkler said.
“The reintroduction of Carrera Cup in Australia is a significant part of our 60 year celebrations in 2011 and is therefore being given extra marketing support as one of our major activities.”
The entire field off 22 2011 Carrera Cup cars is expected to reach Australian shores in early January with all teams offered a track day shake down upon taking delivery.
