Cars from the National Motor Racing Museum’s permanent collection have been driven around Mount Panorama to shoot sound and vision for a new ‘Immersive Room’ due to open this year.
Bathurst Regional Council staff drove the cars around the mountain across three days last week in order to capture the footage, which will be used to give a sense of life to the cars which are housed in the Bathurst museum.
“We are filming for our Immersive Room,” museum coordinator Brad Owen told Speedcafe.com.
“The theatrette, we’ve redeveloped into a kind of projection space where we’re going to have a lap around the track in our cars taken from inside, outside, and drone footage showing the cars going around the track to kind of give our visitors a bit of a sense of speed and noise and the excitement of motor racing.
“It’ll feel like you’re kind of in the middle of it all; rather than kind of walking into what is effectively a quiet shed full of cars that are not doing anything, you get at least a taste of what the whole thing’s all about.”
The Immersive Room will in fact be the theatre room, which has been renovated to take the recently captured vision on three of its walls, and is set to reopen in time for this year’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 (October 10-13).
“It used to have tiered seating and it was the old classic chronology of back in the old days and 1963 and this and that and the other, but we’ve redeveloped it, taken the tiered seating out now, and put a projection on three walls so you get a sense of being in the middle of it all,” explained Owen.
“Last year we did the kind of physical work in the space, we re-lined it and new carpet and that sort of stuff, and this year we’ve been working on the actual content and the equipment to run it all.”
