The Bathurst round of the 2012 Formula 3 Australian Drivers’ Championship will take place as part of Easter’s Bathurst Motor Festival, series organisers have announced.
The April 6-8 event will mark the open-wheel class’ debut at the famed Mount Panorama venue, with three 10 lap races to be held across the weekend.
Formula 3 management hopes that the chance to race at Bathurst will lure international competitors to the class.
Leading team owner Mark Rundle says he’s already received several expressions of interest from Asian and European drivers.
“The Bathurst brand is known worldwide and the opportunity for people to race a Formula 3 car there will be too big for some to pass up,” said the Team BRM principal.
“Bathurst is one of the world’s most famous circuits so to be able to race it – and potentially win there – in a globally recognised category like F3 is very appealing to drivers.
“I think I speak for all of the team owners and drivers in saying that this is a massive step for Formula 3 and we’re all working hard together to embrace it.”
The 2011 Formula 3 Australian Drivers’ Championship is currently being led by Briton James Winslow.
British drivers have won four of the last five Australian titles, with Ben Clucas (2006), Winslow (2008), Joey Foster (2009) and Ben Barker (2010) having all tasted success.
The championship continues with the Shannons Nationals presented by Hi-Tec Oils at Morgan Park, Queensland, from August 12-14.
