After one of the hardest fought titles on record, Australian Touring Car legend Allan Moffat says that whoever wins this year’s V8 Supercars Championship Series will be a deserving champ.
This weekend’s V8 finale – the Sydney Telstra 500 – is going down to the wire, with Jim Beam Racing’s James Courtney leading TeamVodafone’s Jamie Whincup by 53 points. Orrcon Steel FPR’s Mark Winterbottom remains a chance, but his hopes are only mathematical.
Moffat, a four-time Australian Touring Car champ, was not brave enough to pick a title winner, saying that the Sydney street track will throw up a great finale.
“It’s the greatest thing in motor racing to see the title go down to the wire,” he told Speedcafe.com.au.
“After such a long season, whoever gets there first is going to be a very worthy champion, and V8 Supercars should be proud of the way the championship has rolled out.
“Sydney is not the easiest of tracks. In fact, it is a very hard track. Anybody would be nervous about going around missing the cement walls by two millimetres at a time. It will be a real tough fight, and it will be all the more reason for the title candidates to be proud of winning.
“I think it will be a very tough fight, and the real champion will emerge.”
Track action kicks off tomorrow, with V8 Supercars holding four practice sessions.
