FEATURE: The Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport story
LDM

Speedcafe.com takes a look back at Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport’s time in the V8 Supercars Championship following the squad’s victory at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide.

The Melbourne-based team was born in late 2009, a year after the then 19-year-old Dumbrell was left a quadriplegic following a Formula Ford crash.

Dumbrell’s team took shape with the purchase of an ex-Tasman Motorsport Racing Entitlements Contract and an ex-Walkinshaw Racing Holden Commodore VE.

Kiwi Daniel Gaunt was the squad’s foundation driver, but lasted just seven events before being benched in favour of then Walkinshaw co-driver Cameron McConville.

A succession of primary drivers followed with limited success as the team struggled to establish itself in the competitive field, even after a switch to Triple Eight equipment for 2012.

LDM expanded to two cars the following year, purchasing two new Triple Eight built Car of the Future Holdens and a second license from Paul Morris Motorsport.

The squad’s second REC was parked while the team ran a single car in 2014 before returning last year after a lengthy legal wrangle with V8 Supercars.

Holden Motorsport’s Simon McNamara played a key role in getting ex-Walkinshaw driver Russell Ingall to the team for 2014, which provided LDM’s best drivers’ championship result to date of 18th.

Nick Percat’s move from Walkinshaw was similarly orchestrated ahead of last season, where the South Australian showed flashes of speed before being sidelined by a burn and subsequent infection for the final events.

Percat’s remarkable return at the Clipsal 500 netted a maiden win for LDM and a first solo victory for himself, having previously tasted success as a Walkinshaw co-driver at the 2011 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.
