Speedcafe.com has launched a new initiative in conjunction with the Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame to reward the work of motorsport officials and volunteers.

The Spirit of Speed award aims to recognise the contributions of individuals who enable motor racing to take place throughout Australia.

Announced at the inaugural Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame presentation, nominations will open from May, with winners announced every month via Speedcafe.com.

These winners will be judged by a panel of industry professionals with an overall victor to be revealed at the annual Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame dinner next year.

The overall winner will receive a major prize of valued at more than $5,000 including return tickets and accommodation for the annual Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame dinner and two premium tickets to the Rolex Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix.

“There is an old cliche that motor sport just done not happen without officials and volunteers,” said Speedcafe.com owner Brett Murray.

“These selfless and tireless contributors have been part of our sport since the first wheel was turned at Sydney Cricket Ground in 1901 and they will be trackside at Albert Park for the grand prix.

“We thought it fitting that the act of volunteering be highlighted by a truly national award that can reward an official or volunteer for a life-long contribution and bring a regular focus to the 80,000 plus motor sport volunteers around the country.

“While this concept has been in the works at Speedcafe.com for some time it was the development of the Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame that encouraged us to fast-track out ideas.

“As a result, we would like to thank the organising committee for including the Spirit of Speed award as an annual highlight of the Hall of Fame celebrations,” said Murray.

“From next month individuals, clubs or associations will be able to tell their story of their own valuable volunteers who will be eligible for a monthly trophy and rewards for themselves and their nominated club or association.

“Whether they have been cooking hotdogs at the local car club for thirty years or the groundsman at an outback motocross track, everyone will be eligible.”
